OUR HISTORY

The Romano’s Story

The Romano’s have a long history of serving traditional Italian food. In the late 30’s, Romano’s began its tradition in West Virginia. Moving forward to Indiana, the initial location was opened on Kennedy Avenue near the site of the Old Highland Town Theater. The family then made the move to Ridge Road and the start of the drive-in Restaurant in the 50’s.

Many things have changed over the last 70 years. While others have come and gone, Romano’s has been doing what we’ve always done longer and better than anyone.

THE HISTORY OF THE HOAGIE

HOME OF
DA HOAGIE.

Over the years many have asked and few have learned the origin of the Hoagie. Though the name was borrowed from sandwich shops back east, the original hot ham and cheese Hoagie found its origin right here at Romano’s. While trying to satisfy an old friend, “Roscoe” desired a personalized ham and cheese. Grandma Romano used our Blend of Cheeses melted on Polish Ham with Mayo, lettuce, and Tomatoes placed on Italian Bread. The rest is history. So if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, we would like to thank our competitors for making the Hoagie the region’s favorite and Romano’s the “Home of the Hoagie.”
